Activities for Developing Literacy in the Second Language Classroom

Description

This session will present nine ways to view and develop literacy in the second language classroom, from reading as decoding to reading as comprehension, reading as practice, reading as motivation, reading as learning, reading as socio-emotional interaction, reading as a habit, reading as identity formation, and reading as an informed citizen. Participants shall experience activities related to each and leave with a set of tips for teachers and students.

Target Audience: K-9 Teachers of a second/international/aboriginal language; e.g., Ukrainian, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Cree

The 2007 Summer Institute will focus on helping school leaders build leadership capacity and is specifically designed to encourage and empower teachers to integrate videoconferencing technology into their classroom. Collaboration between schools and districts is an integral part of the conference, with many sessions designed as hands-on workshops. Live videoconferencing will be featured to facilitate the sharing of best practices. The deadline for early bird registration is May 20, 2007.
